The setting and outfit of the explorer is a love letter to adventure stories that I couldn't get enough of as a kid, and the character himself was inspired by the antics of the crows that settle in Minneapolis en masse every winter.

Burying beetles, also known as carrion beetles, play an important role in the ecosystem as decomposers of organic material. In the pattern, they are juxtaposed against toxic plants. Both of these have a strange sort of elegance, which I wanted to highlight in this piece.
